My youngest, Hannah-5, has a skin condition, called Keratosis Pilaris, which is basically little red bumps on the back of her arms, sides of her face, and on the fronts of her thighs. Anyway, it is quite common, though there are varying degrees of it, there is no cure, and it is more cosmetic problem than it is harmful...BUT, it is spreading, so I am looking for some natural remedies that will improve the feel of her skin and stop it from getting any worse.
In my search, I have come across some interesting information that I wanted to share. First, mineral oil, which is petroleum based, is in nearly all baby oils. I had always tried to use Johnson's baby oil with my older daughter, but it left me wondering why people even used it. It didn't penetrate the skin well, was a mess, and put oil marks on clothing. Now, there are mixed views about whether mineral oil is good for your skin or really Baaad. What I do know and what I was really surprised about was the difference between using mineral oil and a natural plant based oil, like apricot kernel oil.
The apricot kernel oil is wonderful. It absorbs really well and surprisingly quickly. The brand I used was Burt's Bees, which I found at Target. It has softened her skin, and has made a big difference in the feel of her skin. An unexpected benefit is the way it has made my hands feel...smooth and silky and better than hand lotion! I also use a natural sea salt scrub, to gently and naturally exfoliate her rough areas in the shower. Anyway, hope this helps someone. Let me know if anyone has any experience with other natural baby products. I would love to hear your stories! ~Kelly
